Impact of DevOps on software release speeds

October 11, 2021

Forrester last year reported1:

  • The release frequency of software is slowly but consistently getting faster.
  • The most common frequencies are quarterly and semiannual.
  • DevOps is one of the most influential trends on software over the past decade.
  • DevOps is based on the principle of increasing release frequency, in part, by reducing ‘batch size’ of software changes.

What is DevOps?

DevOps is a software development practice promoting collaboration between Development, Quality Assurance (QA) and Operations.  It works to automate and integrate the processes resulting in faster and more reliable software delivery.  A DevOps culture connects people, processes and technology to deliver continuous value focussed on a shared goal: the rapid delivery of stable, high-quality software from concept to customer.

Operations benefits include increased visibility across teams, more precise requirements, improved comms, repeatable process for deployment, and confidence in deployment.

Customer benefits include quicker deployment times, quality, security and stability.

channelcentral’s establishment of a DevOps function improves delivery

In creating a DevOps role, we have realised multiple benefits:

  • More focus on core functions – removing the need for developers to worry about or get involved with deployment activities.
  • Growing pains –  some scale was required to implement DevOps and would have been difficult before our teams reached a specific size.
  • Faster deployments.
  • Fewer errors once deployed.
  • Faster turnaround of important items and new features for customers.

Our DevOps Manager was selected for several reasons, which we believe are vital to the role operating successfully:

  • Previous experience as a competent developer.
  • Involvement in all aspects, from coding through to deployment.
  • An ability to identify and handle infrastructure items (certificates etc.) .
  • Naturally took on some responsibility before the role was formalised.

channelcentral’s software release frequency is generally quarterly, although more recently monthly.  Release frequency will also depend on the completion of a new feature/project and can even be weekly if/when urgent priority level fixes are needed.

Building with the Right Blocks – Understanding the Best of Software Development Processes

February 4, 2021

If you are a Vendor working with a Software as a Service (SaaS) provider, have you considered the best method to deliver new features or changes you want in your software? Your functionality requirements may be complicated and challenging, so your SaaS Development team must work well with you to ensure the best outcome.

There are many software development processes, and each software development team must adopt a practice that works well for themselves and their customer.

Two of the most common processes are Waterfall and Agile, but what are the differences?

Waterfall is a sequential process, with each stage following from the last, resulting in the entire project being delivered at the end, once all subsequent steps have completed. Forrester has reported that almost 60% of companies use Waterfall product development practices only or a blend of Waterfall and Agile practices. 1

Agile is an iterative approach with each iteration being self-encapsulated, allowing projects to be sub-divided into smaller projects each that can be delivered separately. Forrester has reported that the top metrics that Software Development teams focus on are quality-centric, followed by user stories completed.2

So, what are their benefits and restrictions to developing SaaS?

We use a combination of both methods. Why?

By selecting specific parts of the Waterfall and Agile approaches, we can personalize how we work and be efficient for our customers. Using the Waterfall method’s front design concepts, our Development team can map the project’s requirements and measurements. Using the iterative approach from Agile allows more fluid customer input.  This hybrid strategy works exceptionally well with our customers – known upfront costs and design whilst enabling continuous deployment via the Agile processes. For us, it is easier to plan a project from start to finish and still allow deliverable chunks of work, rather than finishing a process without customer input or preference throughout the development.

We’re exceptionally proud of our ability to manage and combine our software development processes to deliver to and benefit customers. Find out more about our CPQ software: https://www.channelcentral.net/cpq.asp

Canalys Channels Forum Review

October 17, 2018

The largest independent Channel Event in EMEA

channelcentral was an emerging vendor sponsor for the Canalys EMEA Channels Forum this year, and we had a terrific response at this year’s fantastic event in Barcelona. Greg Starks (CSO) and Dan Mason (CTO) represented channelcentral on the 9-11th of October, with Tim Moyle (CEO) also managing to attend part of the event! It was a very busy few days and a perfect opportunity to meet multiple customers and prospects in a very well organised, structured and desirable setting: the stunning Hotel Arts near the beach (see image).

If you are unfamiliar with Canalys events:

The Canalys Channels Forums are major independent events for IT channel partners across EMEA, APAC and LATAM. The events bring together major technology vendors, distributors and resellers to discuss industry trends, forge new business relationships and create sales opportunities. Our emphasis on high-quality content, top-level speakers and innovative ideas and platforms has enabled us to grow and become the world’s largest independent IT channel events.

At Canalys we can meet new, old and existing customers. This is a wonderful opportunity to expose our brand and services to Manufacturers & Channel Partners in attendance. For new customers we meet at Canalys, we can explain how our services work and how we can possibly benefit their company. It builds a strong foundation for a relationship between two businesses.

I really enjoyed meeting customers, new and old. It’s a great opportunity to get feedback on what we’re getting right and what we need to improve on. Also probing for opportunities to deliver new complementary services.
Tim Moyle, CEO, channelcentral.net Limited

In addition to some great meetings with vendors, we were able to demonstrate our boost! data service to several resellers. This allows resellers who have customer-facing web stores to dramatically improve the user experience for customers purchasing servers, storage and networking. Resellers consume the boost! service data, then use our “Attach Patterns” to create a very easy-to-use interface for attaching common/popular options to the base system, integrated seamlessly into their web store. boost! supports HPE Servers, Storage and Networking, and Dell “Stock and Sell” servers, with more brands coming soon.
Greg Starks, Chief Strategy Officer, channelcentral.net Limited

Thanks again to everyone involved in Canalys, and we hope to see you next year.

Avoiding ‘Tax on Use’ in CPQ Billing

October 9, 2018

Lots of channelcentral’s competitors use a Software Licensing billing methodology: cost per seat usually. Some bill based on utilization: the more you use the tool, the more you pay. It’s proportionate. It’s fair. It’s also madness; here’s why:

• Customers don’t like variable costs, at all.
• If you, or your customer, is trying to promote the use of CPQ tools versus manual ways to provide quotations to customers then why tax on use?
• Does adding a customer, or processing a quote, cost a CPQ Company anything?
• Win/Win billing systems (e.g. taking a commission from orders) quickly turn into Lose/Win or Win/Lose.

From the outset channelcentral set out to avoid ‘Tax on Use’. An annual subscription covers the cost of the service and includes the license, hosting, support and IT integration services. It includes unlimited utilization by Employees and Customers. Those subscribers know exactly what they were going to pay for the contracted term. Customers like predictable costs.

The more the customer uses the CPQ Application the lower the cost per quote or transaction. If channelcentral improves the functionality of the CPQ Application, resulting in better results or greater utilization – the subscriber is getting ‘More for the Same’.

On a similar thread some of our competitors have different costs for different feature sets. This is a stealth tax – demanding higher costs for features that already exist and don’t really cost more to add. Having a fully inclusive service for a customer adds to the subscription feel and generates greater goodwill and loyalty.

channelcentral’s experience is that its subscription model promotes higher utilization and delivers better results, with less complexity than models that tax on use.

Annual Company Meeting #11

October 2, 2018

31st July 2018 saw channelcentral complete its 11th year of trading. Once the dust had settled on the Annual Accounts, we held a Company Meeting in our Tewkesbury Office for all staff. Aside from discussing the financial results and outlook it was an opportunity to welcome new starters, hand out some awards and review what our staff think of channelcentral via our annual Company Survey:

• In part due to “re-on-shoring” some of our Development function, our net headcount increase over the last 6 months is 8 heads. channelcentral has 33 Employees (including sub-contractors). 5 years ago that number was 10. Now we have 10 Developers!

• 5 of our 33 Employees either have been, or still are, Apprentices. Another 2 either have been, or are, Undergraduate Placements.

• Via our Company Survey we improved in almost all areas. 100% felt satisfied or very satisfied in their jobs.

We handed out awards to:

  • 5 employees who have reached 3 Years of Service.
  • 2 employees who have reached 5 Years of Service.
  • 1 employee who has reached 10 Years of Service, and has therefore earned a sabbatical.

This year’s award was themed “Snapchat Selfies”.

‘We would like to thank all of our customers, and key suppliers without whom we would not have succeeded thus far.’Tim Moyle CEO

Future trends in Distribution services – Looking forward in 2018 & beyond

February 28, 2018

Having served the IT Channel for a decade and working with Manufacturers, Distributors and Resellers in over 60 Countries, channelcentral is well placed to observe Channel movements and trends. We recently contributed to the IT Europa Channel Predictions report, so we thought we’d share what we had to say:

Traditional IT buying and selling motions are under pressure to evolve.  Our Chief Strategy Officer, Greg Starks, believes that, “The lines between traditional upfront selling and Device-As-A-Service/Software-As-A-Service will continue to blur. The channel [distribution] will offer hybrid financing that address selling upfront + As-A-Service together. This will allow partners and customers to visualize packaged As-A-Service offerings alongside financed custom solutions as a comprehensive OpEx payment timeline.” We hear manufacturers talking about Device-As-A-Service every week. We recognize the role that distribution now plays in the ‘As a Service’ IT procurement model and partners who engage closely with distribution will be more successful.

As-A-Service offerings will increasingly be seen as a way of ‘locking customers in’ and earning their loyalty.  Everything that is offered ‘As-A-Service’ needs to be validated, yet you still want to give your customers choice and not be too prescriptive. Packaging/bundling up an ever-wider number of products, whilst managing your customers’ journey and still offering them choice, will create a need for more sophisticated eCommerce sites that have integrated Configure, Price, Quote (CPQ) software. Without this, the management of these offerings is extremely resource intensive. Traditionally, distributors have had to assist customers with their hardware configurations or ask them to click out to hosted CPQ software.

There is still a time and a place for this level of complexity but we will be seeing a shift in the market. Already, hosted CPQ Software has an ever-growing number of attach options to fulfil the ‘As-A-Service’ model but what if Partners can leverage their offerings even more easily than that? Greg Starks, thinks that “Manufacturers and Distributors will invest in point solutions to bring just enough CPQ Software into self-service IT buying. Beyond just configuration, tools that help to shape demand toward the high-confidence products that can be delivered immediately.” These are likely to be served as ‘plug-ins’ to eCommerce systems with full basket integration.

As distribution advances its capability to aggregate their breadth of suppliers into packaged “As-A-Service” offerings, smart Partners can take new, more appealing sales propositions to their customers. In the Noughties End Users would reach out to their resellers when they had CapEx available to spend on a specific project. If a Reseller won a €2m deal one year they’d be expected to win one next year and the year after. How do you resource that? Fast forward to now and that’s now OpEx spread over several years.
As-a-Service is not just about predictability of revenue and removing barriers to driving new IT projects there are other advantages including:

1. Partners become strategic to their End User as they sign long-term contracts to provide IT Cloud or Infrastructure projects based on a Managed Service.

2. Distributors now represent hardware, software, services, finance and cloud vendors making the choice of solutions near infinite. Partners can guide end users to truly optimized solutions.

3. Partners (usually) bill the customer monthly and that’s a good thing – consistent interaction with a customer gives Sales opportunities to engage, seek feedback on the effectiveness of the solution and identify new opportunities.

4. Software-As-A-Service is incredibly easy to audit versus traditional licenses ensuring the End User is compliant but also the sales opportunity is maximized. Businesses without full “license” compliance equals a lost revenue opportunity as well as a risk to their business.

5. Working indexing into contracts means that margin is protected over the term (example would be linking the price to the Retail Price Index or similar).

6. There’s such a great opportunity for partners to differentiate here and that means less price comparison.

7. End-users need help. Yes, commodity resellers sell servers and over time similar companies will use technology to improve that experience, but partners are best placed to recommend solutions.

Do you need help implementing your As-A-Service business model? We can certainly assist. Just contact us for an informal discussion. We’d be glad to offer you advice.

Introducing our new Red Hat Product Selector

August 31, 2017

We are excited to announce the launch of a new Red Hat Product Selector. We have been working with Red Hat to develop a solution that guides customers through a selection of filters to assist them in their buying journey.

Initially, the Product Selector is only available for use inside our Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) iQuote Configure, Price, Quote software but in time, it could be available elsewhere.

The Red Hat Product Selector has made it easier than ever to build a 100% validated quotation.

Simply login to iQuote as normal, select your base HPE unit and once you are through to the configuration screen, select ‘Software’ and ‘Red Hat’ and you will be presented with a selection of filters to choose from. Once you have chosen your requirements, our intelligent Product Selector will recommend which Red Hat products are compatible to build you a complete HPE Server solution.

Our iCreate Software hits the news again

August 23, 2017

Our iCreate Software is developed exclusively for Westcoast UK and is going from strength to strength. It’s latest release includes an exclusive customised-to-order (CTO) initiative for education-focused channel partners. The configuration tool enables resellers, or their end-user schools, colleges and universities, to design and build their own bespoke HP desktop PCs – and then receive delivery within 48 hours of their order!

The software can be integrated into the website or e-commerce platforms of Westcoast’s partners. Westcoast partners can rebrand the software to fit with their own colour-way and even add in their own services.

Paul Hamilton, Client Director at Westcoast said “It’s a comprehensive, versatile offering iCreate HPFEthat benefits partners, educators and learners.”

Initially, the CTO tool can be used to configure desktop PC systems but Westcoast and HP are planning to add laptops and other products in the short term. The latest release has been picked up by channel press and is set to be a highly utilised tool by Westcoast’s channel partners.

Ever wondered what CPQ integration looks like?

March 2, 2016

channelcentral CPQ Ecosystem

For those that are new to Configure, Price, Quote (CPQ) tools it can be hard to understand what an integration could look like and how it can work for your business.

The following diagram shows a typical CPQ integration for one of our customers. channelcentral offer the Software as a Service (SAAS) to their customer (CPQ Host) so they can make their sales processes more efficient. For those customers that would like to gain maximum efficiencies, the service is extended to their customers (CPQ Consumer) through webstore integrations. The CPQ tool suddenly becomes very powerful as it has B2B and B2C functionality to open up your market and provide real-time reporting. Whichever CPQ Service and level of integration is required, you can be assured of on-going channelcentral support and lifecycle management as part of your SAAS contract.
